Three professional golf caddies reveal the secret to preventing three (and four!) putting.

All too often we see amateur golfers complaining about three and, dare we say it, four putts. This often is a result of a lack of understanding and time taken when it comes to green reading, rather than a terrible stroke.
So, let's first break down why you are coming in with 40 putts per round and how you can quickly change that.
The reason behind almost every three putt is a lack of pace control. Golfers all around the world obsess over their line and whilst line is important, it is hitting the ball six feet past the hole that leads to your three putts in almost every scenario.
So, how do we fix it?
Firstly, spend a little more time looking at how the slope of the green is going to affect the pace of the ball. Is it downhill or uphill? That should be your first question before you even think about your line, especially if you are struggling with pace control. Secondly, looking at the putt from the 'low side' of the hole, will help you to gauge just how severe the slope is much more accurately.
Following that, you can take a look more intently at your line but remember, if you are outside ten feet, a two putt is great for most amateurs. Tour average is around 40% from ten feet and these are the very best players in the world, so don't beat yourself up over putts from that distance.
