Wind can turn an easy round into a mental (and physical) test. But the secret isn’t swinging harder — it’s thinking smarter.
Here’s what we always tell golfers when the breeze picks up:
✅ Take more club. Don’t fight the wind with force.
Everyone has a tendency to swing harder to counteract the wind but this will likely generate more spin, which will ultimately result in your ball going an even short distance.
✅ Ball back in your stance
Move the ball slightly back to keep the flight under control — but don’t overdo it. Moving the ball too far back can promote an excessive in to out club path and dramatically change your swing characteristics.
✅ Accept the crosswindInstead of trying to “kill” the ball into the wind, allow for the drift.
Play to bigger targets, and don’t aim at pins tucked near trouble.
✅ Wind affects the ball more when it's 'into' rather than 'downwind'
It's impossible to measure the wind, as it is a constant variable, however you will soon learn whether it is a one or two club mind (or more). Just remember the wind won't quite as big an impact when you are downwind as opposed to when the wind is in your face.
✅ Stay patient
In windy rounds, everyone makes mistakes. The best scores often come from those who stay calm and adapt, rather than forcing perfect shots.
As caddies, we see it every week: it’s less about raw power, and more about smart choices, discipline, and letting the wind be part of your plan — not your enemy.
